Republican Mess In The IL 5th

With the election of a new chairman to the RNC, Republican leadership promised to pay attention and put forth effort into all opportunities to elect Republicans to congress. That means finding viable candidates in all 435 districts.

Job one should have been the Special election taking place this March to replace Rahm Emmanuel in the Illinois 5th. And yet…nothing.

I’ve looked at the candidates and surveyed the area. The front-runner is Patrick O’Connor, or, as I prefer to call him, Rahm Lite. Just about every lawn and every small business’ window in the district has an “O’Connor for Congress” sign. I’ve also seen a handful of shows of support for Cook County Commissioner Mike Quigley, a man who I actually met once. I had to shower for two hours straight and I still couldn’t get his slime off of me.

So I tried to look at how the supposedly revitalized RNC was responding.

There are three “serious”and I use the term very loosely—candidates on the Republican side. First is our “front runner,” Tom Hanson. Hanson ran against Emmanuel in 2008, but of course, he lost. Can anybody say “Adlai Stevenson?” Looking at his campaign website, I cringed. It looks like it was designed by a high school sophomore and has just about as many grammatical errors on the front page as would be expected from a website designed by a high school student from the Chicago Public School System. He made me want to throw away the State Constitution and run myself. I’m sure I’d do better.

Our second-best is Rosanna Pulido, the State Director of the Minuteman Project. You’re likely thinking what I am: is the Illinois GOP serious? She’s a one-issue candidate with views on immigration that make Ann Coulter look rational and moderate, running in a district where white people are considered a “healthy minority.” If she gets over 4% of the vote, I think I’ll choke on something. But at least her website looks more professional than Hanson’s, so she gets to lose in style. By the way, on her front page, illegal immigration is mentioned in four out of eight of her “headlines,” including sections on “Defending Our Chicago Police Officers,” “Rosanna For Congress,” and two that are actually called “Illegal Immigration.”

There are other candidates on the ballot, but you get the point. The Illinois 5th should be our first real fight; a symbol that Republicans are prepared to get back on the horse and that we really are more competent than the shamed Blagojevich Democrats. Instead, we are displaying ourselves as a party in ruin; why would Illinoisans vote for the party that can’t run one viable candidate in one special election? This state will vote for Democrats with the logic, “Well, they’re corrupt, but at least they’re smart enough to occasionally accomplish something. These Republicans are boobs, but, OK, honest boobs.” Wake up, Republicans! If this is a sign of things to come, then our party is, indeed, finished.

The March Toward Obama-livion

There is no doubt in my mind that there are many patriotic Democrats in America. There is no doubt in my mind that the few radicals and lunatics in their party give the majority a bad name. But there is also no doubt in my mind that there are no sensible Democrats in positions of power anymore.

What’s more, I see the beliefs of the extreme left being validated and mainstreamed with Senator Obama’s candidacy for President. Scrolling through a “Facebook” group, I was disturbed to see this post by someone named R. Hawkins:

“It has been a while a few months and i had expected all of you great brains would have solved all of the nations/worlds problems and had us all marching lock step to a nice brass band to the tune of some ultra right wing anthem. But instead i find the same old tired debate over he said she said what a shame such great minds led astray by their own youthful inexperience crusing town in dadys suv impressing your friends with your quick wit and insight into our nations politics.

well let me say you need to get on board OBAMA is in and the ignorance of greed is out.. I have heard it first hand from some of the most conservative people i know that they are mad as hell and ready to try some CHANGE.

i would call you all out by name but dont want to waste the time I just want to poke all you right wingers real good

with laugh and a cry and DO NOT FORGET their is a recruiter waiting for you in the phone book so Do the right thing and join and serve try being a real PATRIOT....”

Obviously, the primary problem with this posting is that Mr. Hawkins has no grasp of grammar, but the school systems’ failures are for another posting. My real gripe here is that the ideas put forth in this post are not at all uncommon. Where in history did the Communist Manifesto come to replace the Democratic Party platform? At what point did the fringe Leftists, who think that the Republican Party represents "the ignorance of greed" hijack the Party of Jackson and FDR? And why is it that rational minds are effectively swept to the side and ignored? All this in favor of a man who speaks of "change" and "hope" the way that Che Guevara spoke of "change" and "revolution." This feels too familiar for me.

We all know that this isn’t anything new, but there was a time that someone like Senator Obamawho has absolutely no substance and who promises $500 billion tax hikes to pay for a socialized healthcare plan that is predestined to failwould have been ignored and passed aside. But here, he’s running for President and actually has a decent shot. Moreover, his most vocal supporters seem to be some sort of bizarre historical holdover from the New Left movement from Vietnam protests.

Here’s what counts: America could be in real trouble. And we definitely are if we allow the politics of Lenin to inhabit the bodies of snake-oil salesmen who claim to be the Democratic mainstream. I find myself wishing that someone could see the dark, quasi-communist movement that lies ahead, but sanity has become a screaming voice in the vacuum of space.

The concern is that we aren’t far away from having every industry and business become a socialized institution. Low taxes are replaced with the word “greed” on the Left, even though conservatives have been found to be better than 30% more generous than liberals per year in terms of charitable contributions. So, why, exactly, am I supposed to see such a massive difference between the current Democratic establishment and the Communist party? They both say that anyone who wants to spend his or her own money in his or her own way is “greedy.” They both say that big Government needs to take over any business whenever there even seems to be a reason (good or bad). And they both find the United States Constitution to be a stumbling block rather than laws and rules to live and govern by. This would be bad enough, if the radical candidate wasn’t also advocating a frightening, dangerous foreign policy.

We already know the naïveté of Obama’s foreign policy. He could desperately use to read this article from the Associated Press, which proves that Iraqi citizens are starting to stand up and that the surge worked. Iraq will be a success, and yet Obama still preaches defeat. He talks of invading Pakistan, even though it’s probably the closest thing America has to an ally in the Middle East. And forget the fact that he unconditionally wants to sit and chat with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Raul Castro. But I’m preaching to the choir. This is, after all, townhall.com, not the readership of the New York Times. I just hope that America, as a whole, can see what lies ahead if the Left doesn’t wake up soon.
